Grants

You will find information about the Trust's guidelines and application processes on these pages.

In 2012 we received 329 applications and made 62 new grants.

Around half our grants are to organisations we have not funded before.

Demand continues to be high and the success rate of applications is currently running at around one in six, so please do not apply unless you strongly meet one of our priorities.  If you are unsure whether your project meets our priorities, please contact us for advice.

The Trustees are mainly looking to fund formal education projects.  Informal education and projects that are only loosely educational will not be funded.

For work outside the UK, Trustees are looking for strategic projects with potential to bring about lasting change over the medium to long term.  Grassroots projects, such as those that pay the school fees or uniform costs of students are extremely unlikely to be funded.

We operate a rolling programme and applications can be made at any time.  There are no deadlines.  Decisions are usually made within eight weeks of us receiving your application.  If you have not heard from us after eight weeks please contact us to check that we received your application.

Our guidelines may have changed since you last applied or since the information you read in a funding directory was published, so please check you have read the most up-to-date copy before submitting your application.  The guidelines were last updated on 2nd January 2013.

Please read our Guidelines for Applicants carefully before submitting an application, including the list of activities we will not fund - one in four of the applications we received last year were ineligible - usually the result of applicants not reading our guidelines before applying.  We do not make grants in response to general appeals or mailshot requests for donations (these account for a large proportion of ineligible applications).

You may also find it useful to look at the 2012 List of Grants Paid, though please note that some of the grants were made two or three years ago when different guidelines applied.

If you are successful in applying for a grant, our offer will be subject to our standard terms and conditions of grant.  You will be sent a copy if you are offered a grant, but should you wish to read them before making your application, please download the sample copy at the bottom of this page.

Information for organisations in receipt of a grant is also available through this section of the website.
